Safety & Training Director

MTD is seeking applicants for Safety & Training Director. The Safety and Training Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Safety and Training department. This position reports to the Chief Administrative Officer.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Business, Transportation, Planning, or a Safety/Security related field is preferred

Experience Requirements

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a work setting, preferably in a planning or transportation organization

Possess or have the ability to obtain within eighteen months the following:

  • Illinois CDL Class A or B with passenger endorsement
  • TSI Transit Safety and Security Program Certificate (or equivalent, such as CTAA Certified Safety and Security Officer)
  • TSI Substance Abuse Management and Program Compliance Certificate
  • TSI Reasonable Suspicion Determination for Supervisors Certificate
  • TSI Advanced Bus Collision Investigation Certificate
  • TSI Effectively Managing Transit Emergencies Certificate
  • TSI SMS Principles for Transit Certificate
  • TSI Instructor’s Course for Transit Trainers
  • TSI Transit Bus System Safety certificate


The Safety & Training Director oversees all activities within the Safety & Training department.  Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Proactively promote a culture of safety within all areas of MTD
  • Ensure compliance with Federal Transportation Administration Public Transit Agency Safety Plan (PTASP)
  • Plan and implement future training and educational needs throughout the organization
  • Manage professional development for Safety and Training Department personnel
  • Manage the MTD substance abuse program and ensure compliance with all associated regulations
  • Maintain effective communication with management, staff and department personnel
  • Develop and update training material, practices and standards throughout the organization
  • Ensure compliance with Illinois Secretary of State exams and inspections
  • Maintain all necessary records associated with the State of Illinois/MTD Third Party Certification Program
  • Manage MTD compliance with OSHA regulations
  • Serve as a member of the Core Team for the Quality Management System and manage the Management System Key Process of Safety & Training
  • Serve as an Internal Auditor for the Environmental Management System
