MCORE Construction Enters Stage 3 of Reroutes

Campus construction is changing gears again as students push through the Fall semester.

Stage 3 of MTD reroutes for MCORE Project 4 will begin on Tuesday, September 24 and are projected to end in December of 2019. Stage 3 involves the rebuilding Wright Street, much like Stage 1, but expanding work to the southbound lane of Wright Street. And once again, northbound traffic will be maintained on Wright Street during this construction on the southbound lane. Project 4 will continue into 2020 and subsequent stages of construction, along with their corresponding reroutes for MTD service, are expected to be released next year.

Several MTD routes will face temporary changes in order to accommodate the construction. Impacted routes are the 1/100S Yellow/Yellow Hopper, 4W Blue, 5W Green Weekday Daytime trips with the “J” Footnote (to Sixth & Pennsylvania), 9A Brown, 13/130S Silver, 130 Silver Limited, 22/220S Illini, and the 22/220 Illini Limited. While existing Designated Stops will be used along the reroutes, new Designated Stops include Fourth & Daniel (SE & NW Corners) and Fourth & Green (SW Corner).

The process of completing MCORE construction is lengthy and not without disruptions; however, the end result will greatly improve mobility for everyone. This busy corridor serves bicyclists, pedestrians, cars, and buses in high volumes. Overall, MCORE will enhance mobility choices, with improvements to pedestrian access routes, bicycle lanes, transit efficiency, and vehicle flow. MCORE Projects 4 and 5 aim to increase the utilization and efficiency of this corridor through updated infrastructure (new and repaired pavement and sidewalks, new pavement markings, replacement of storm and sanitary sewers, and enhancements to bus stops and bicycle facilities). These projects will also bring major improvements to ADA accessibility throughout the area. MTD would like to thank riders for their patience during this project; what may be a temporary delay for trips today will be a long-lasting improvement for thousands of commutes for years to come.

Detailed reroute announcements are available on MTD’s website and can be found on the Reroute page; complete maps and information on MCORE are also posted at mtd.org/mcore under Project 4. Riders are encouraged to sign up for a free MTD account to create customized SMS and/or email alerts when changes are made to their favorite routes.
