MTD Fall 2020 Service Changes

MTD is reducing scheduled service effective Friday, August 21. The reductions primarily impact routes serving campus, and late-night service after 1:00 am. The decision was made after extensive analysis of service demand, workforce availability, and new demands related to adequate COVID-19 pandemic response.

Providing reliable service that our passengers can plan their lives around is elemental to the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District. With this reduction to our full service, MTD can ensure consistent provision of our fixed-route bus service and ADA Paratransit trips, deploy additional vehicles to respond quickly to capacity issues, and be responsive to evolving community transportation needs.

The details on the routes and schedules affected by this reduction are listed below, and are also available on our website, mtd.org, and through our passenger tools like real-time information and our Trip Planner. Passengers consulting our print materials, like our Maps & Schedules Book, are advised to double check their trips and connections using these online tools or by calling 217.384.8188.

SafeRides Connect

MTD is maintaining SafeRides as scheduled and will provide additional vans to respond to demand. August 21 through October 31, SafeRides operates from 7:00P until 6:30A, with final reservations taken until 6:00A. November 1 through November 28, SafeRides will operate from 5:00P until 6:30A, with final reservations taken until 6:00A.

November 29 through the end of the University of Illinois’ Winter Break, January 16, SafeRides will operate from 5:00P until 12:30A, with final reservations taken until 12:00A.

MTD is temporarily extending its SafeRides service boundary after 1:00 AM to include bus stops along North Lincoln Avenue. This Lincoln Ave. corridor includes the ONE South/North development, Capstone Quarters, The Atrium, and The Retreat. It is important to note that SafeRides will not provide door-to-door service within these complexes, but rather a safe ride to a complex’s bus stop proper.

Scheduled Fall Break Service Reductions Extend for Remainder of Semester

MTD reduces service during the University of Illinois Breaks, including Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. These planned reductions will further reduce service and will begin at the start of service on November 21. Because the University of Illinois will not return to in-person instruction after Fall Break, the reduced non-UI service will continue through the end of the Fall Semester, which concludes December 18.

These same reductions will also continue through the University of Illinois Winter Break, which is currently scheduled for December 19, 2020 – January 16, 2021.

2 Red: Express trips (designated with the L and U footnotes) do not operate Monday through Friday.

13 Silver: 20-minute frequencies during Weekday Daytime. Trips on those schedules with the “U” footnote do not operate.
