MTD Offers Online School Trip & Learn to Ride Resources for Unit 4, District 116 Families | February 17, 2021
As the year 2021 marches on, both Champaign Unit 4 and Urbana School District 116 Middle and High Schools continue to modify and implement Back to School plans that combine both remote and in-person learning. While these plans may continue to change and evolve, MTD is happy to announce that updated School Trip routes, times, and maps – and virtual Learn-to-Ride resources – remain available on our Schools page at mtd.org.
MTD is aware that preparing students to access public transportation is a very small part of the information students and families need during these rapidly-changing times. However, we do still believe that the ability to safely and competently access transit is an important life skill that we would like to put into the hands of students and their families.
Through MTD’s partnership with the Champaign and Urbana school districts, we have traditionally been able to answer questions and provide families with School Trip information in-person during each school’s registration period. Each spring we would also normally provide on-site Learn to Ride presentations to outgoing Fifth Grade classes to teach students the rules for riding MTD before they go on to middle school. Naturally, that did not occur this year with schools initially suspending most in-person registration and instruction due to COVID-19.
We hope the tools and School Trip information we’ve been able to provide virtually will be helpful to families and students preparing for the return to in-person learning, families who may be new to our community, or those families who just need a refresher.
Urbana School District 116 in-person learning for Middle and High School students occurs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, in both the morning and afternoon. Beginning February 23, 2021, Champaign Unit 4 in-person learning for Middle and High School students will occur Tuesdays through Fridays, beginning between 7:50AM and 8:05AM, and ending in the afternoons between 12:25PM and 12:40PM.
Families can use our Schools page to find updated School Trip information by clicking on a school, and clicking View Route Info for your neighborhood. A detailed route map with School Trip start times and bus stop information will display for trips to school and home from school. Click Download Map to save a copy of the route information for your student’s trips.
Families can also click on a school and enter a starting or home address in the white Address box on the school’s landing page. MTD's School Trip Planner will provide updated routing information for trips to school and home from school.
Families with students who may be riding MTD to school for the first time can access our Learn to Ride resources by clicking the Learn to Ride link at the top of the Schools page. This link provides access to the Learn to Ride training video the District would normally present to Fifth Grade classes in person. This link also accesses a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) families might have, and these FAQs have been translated into Spanish and French.
MTD encourages families and community members to explore these online school resources, and to call us with questions at 217.384.8188. When our buses are running, there is always someone here to answer your call; we’re happy to help.
MTD believes that providing students with transportation on our buses to and from school affords our community the opportunity to train a whole new generation to use and be comfortable with public transportation. We view this as an important life skill that a lot of kids in communities our size may not learn, unless they go to school in Champaign-Urbana, or another, larger city. Riding MTD gives kids the chance to learn how better to interact with adults and conduct themselves in public settings, which makes for a better community.
