As we pursue our commitment to safety and service in public transportation and mobility, MTD engages in all kinds of partnerships that help our communities grow healthier and stronger. Our uncompromising fiscal responsibility and willingness to provide support when asked have allowed us to take on amazing projects that benefit our employees, workplace, community, and neighbors.

Zero Emission Technology

Ongoing

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District is thrilled to welcome our first zero emission buses. As an industry leader, MTD will be one of the first transportation agencies in the country to power hydrogen fuel cell electric buses using 100% renewable hydrogen generated by solar energy.

From sun to street, these buses provide cleaner air for all - it’s like riding on sunshine!

Illinois Terminal Expansion

Ongoing

Illinois Terminal is a true multimodal facility accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists, served by our local buses, rural transit providers, intercity bus providers, passenger rail, ride share zone, and parking for 70 bicycles. This facility has served our community well, helping downtown Champaign thrive, but it is time to expand. Since the opening in 1999, the number of routes serving Illinois Terminal has increased by 30% and peak utilization has grown by 50%.

Downtown Urbana Off-Street Transit Facility

Proposed

MTD is planning mobility and access for an entire region, now and for the future. MTD & the City of Urbana are working together to study the feasibility of an economic development project that incorporates an off-street transit facility with an intergovernmental center.

MCORE

Complete

MTD, in partnership with the City of Champaign, the City of Urbana, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois), secured a $15.7 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER VI) Grant to expand mobility choices and increase access to employers, education, healthcare, and other services along five core transit corridors in the University District.

CDL Training Center

Complete

Located just east of MTD’s Administration & Operations Facility, MTD’s CDL Training Center consists of a 5,500 square foot facility to provide an on-site office, classroom, restroom, and vehicle storage. The Center can accommodate all of the required maneuvers for training while ensuring a high level of safety and is marked for buses, firetrucks, bicycles, and tractor trailers.

Maintenance Facility & Garage Expansion

Complete

MTD's 111-bus fleet, repair & body shop, bus wash, other vehicles, and parts inventory all need a home. This facility was built to meet that need and later expanded to accommodate MTD's Safety & Training Department and their efforts. The upstairs space includes classrooms for new employee and review training, driving simulators, computer-based training, and space for rural transit offices.

Illinois Terminal

Complete

Completed in 1999, Illinois Terminal is MTD’s multimodal facility located at 45 E. University Ave., Champaign. Along with its fourth floor CityView Event & Meeting Center, Illinois Terminal serves people daily from all over the region. The Illinois Terminal project kickstarted the redevelopment of downtown Champaign, resulting in the vibrant, inviting city center that Champaign enjoys today.
