Kindness is a Piece of Cake: A Sweeter Way to Ride

Every day, thousands of riders share space on MTD vehicles, and small actions can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe, comfortable, and on time. As ridership continues to grow and service stays busy, creating a positive experience for everyone matters more than ever.

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) is excited to introduce a new rider-focused initiative designed to make every trip a little smoother and a lot sweeter. Launching April 7, Kindness is a Piece of Cake brings a fun and approachable way to highlight everyday transit etiquette across the system.

Featuring a cast of dessert-inspired characters like S’more, Croissant, Waffle, and Cake, the campaign encourages riders to be safe, courteous, and kind every time they board. The campaign highlights simple everyday actions that help keep everyone secure, comfortable, and moving efficiently. From practicing safe habits around the bus, to being mindful of others’ space and needs, these guidelines are designed to make riding easier for everyone. Below are a few key ways riders can help create a better experience systemwide.

Be A Safe Rider

  • Creating a better ride starts with safety. Don’t stand by or in the way of the doors. Bus doors take a moment to fully open and close, and Operators cannot always stop them immediately. Standing back helps prevent getting caught and keeps the boarding process smooth.
  • Don’t cross the street in front of the bus. Wait until the bus and any other traffic has passed. Crossing too soon can put you at risk, especially if another vehicle is approaching from a direction you can’t see.
  • Stand behind the white line located on the floor next to the Operator. This ensures they have a clear field of vision and gives you space to hold onto stanchions for balance while the bus is moving.
  • Always keep your feet on the floor while riding. Please do not place your feet on seats or hang from stanchions. This creates safety hazards for you and others.

Be A Courteous Rider

  • Keep track of your belongings, and if something does get left behind, contact Lost & Found (217.384.3577) for assistance.
  • Avoid eating or drinking on the bus. This helps keep vehicles clean and comfortable for everyone, especially those with allergies or other sensitivities.
  • Have your fare or pass ready when the bus arrives. This helps reduce delays and keeps everyone moving efficiently.
  • Keep your belongings on your lap or at your feet so seats remain available for other riders. Seats are meant for riders, not belongings.
  • If you’re waiting at a stop with multiple routes and a bus that isn’t yours arrives, give a quick shake of the head to signal the Operator.
  • Likewise, when you see your bus approaching, give a wave or step forward to let the Operator know you plan to board.

Be A Kind Rider

  • Offer your seat near the front to those who may need it most, including seniors, individuals with mobility needs, or caregivers with strollers.
  • When boarding, move toward the back of the bus when possible. This helps reduce crowding near the doors and makes space for others.
  • If you’re listening to music or taking a call, use headphones and keep your volume low to avoid distracting the Operator or disrupting your fellow passengers.

Public transit works best when everyone does their part. With Kindness is a Piece of Cake, MTD invites riders to take small actions that make a big difference, because a little courtesy goes a long way. These actions also support MTD Operators, giving them the space and focus they need to safely serve our community each day. Because when everyone rides with kindness, the whole system runs a little smoother and a lot sweeter.
