MTD Offers Free Rides to the Polls on Election Day | Tuesday, November 5

To encourage civic participation, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) will help voters get to the polls by offering free rides this Election Day on Tuesday, November 5. Free rides will apply from the start of service on Tuesday morning through 8:00 pm.

All rides on MTD’s fixed-route bus service will be free from the start of service until 8:00 pm, one hour after polls close. Voters are encouraged to use MTD’s Trip Planner on mtd.org to plan their travel in advance. In addition, MTD Access, the ADA paratransit van service, will be free for eligible persons with disabilities traveling to and from voting locations.

Before you head to the polls on Election Day, be sure to set yourself up for success by following these tips:

  • Register to Vote or Confirm Your Voter Registration Status. Voter registration is required for participating in national, state, and local elections. Visit Vote.Gov for voter registration information.
  • Make a Plan for Election Day. If you are voting in person, be sure to find your polling location and its voting hours before you go to vote. If you can’t make it to the polls on November 5,  take advantage of early voting opportunities.
  • Learn More About Voting Options Near You. The Champaign County Clerk is the election authority for Champaign County. Information for voters, including candidate information, voter status, and polling locations can be found on the Champaign County Clerk’s website.

MTD has provided complimentary fares on Election Day since 2016 as an ongoing initiative to remove barriers to civic engagement and increase voter participation. Riders are encouraged to find their voting location through the Champaign County Clerk's Office.
